Star Trek: Serenity
Iconian, Shadow, Demon
Iconians are an incorporeal being with a spiked, violet-black exoskeleton. They are similar in shape to a praying mantis with an upper body, shoulder spines, a mobile head, and at least one pair of grasping forelimbs. The main body is supported by multiple pairs of legs. Their legs resemble those of a spider, but each Iconian has six of them instead of eight.
The Iconians have fourteen “eyes” in total divided into four groups. Two sets of three arranged, slanted upward and two sets of four arranged to align perfectly under the first sets.
The Iconians were an ancient and highly advanced civilization that was destroyed some 200,000 years ago by the orbital bombardment of their homeworld, Iconia. Ancient texts called the Iconians “Demons of Air and Darkness” or “Shadows”, who were said to have the ability to appear at will on far-flung planets without the use of starships.
Historically the Iconians were generally described as a race of conquerors, though recently some scholars disputed this claim as a distortion perpetuated by species who feared and demonized their advanced technology, and eventually destroyed them. It was speculated that not all of the Iconians perished in the attacks, but rather used their gateways to escape to other worlds. Indeed, the similarity between the Iconian language and the later languages of Dewan, Dinasian, and Iccobar has been cited as evidence of this theory.
According to Regis, the Iconians escaped the destruction of their civilization and settled in the Triangle. A cluster of planets far from all others, and Ideal place to hide. Once here they came across the T’kon whom had escaped the destruction of their own civilization some 400, 000 years prior. Never had the Iconians seen such a powerful race, a power they desired for themselves.
The T’kon detected their infiltration and banished them to N-space for all eternity. Only now have they discovered a possible means of escape. Regis claims to be told this personally from an actual Iconian.
